September is National Emergency Preparedness month in the United States. This is the perfect opportunity to take three major steps in getting you and your family ready for any natural disasters: research, make a kit and make a plan. This entry will discuss the last of these steps, making a plan.
Establishing a plan of action for you and your family can be key, especially if you aren’t all together when an emergency situation happens. You should establish a plan to meet up if you are evacuating your home. You also need to check with your business and child’s school or daycare and be aware of their emergency plans as well. Having practice runs of what you plan to do in emergency situations can also be a good idea to make sure you have everything worked out.
Once you have collected all the information you need, you can sit down with your family/friends and share what you know. Encourage them to ask questions and make sure everything is clear to everyone. Consider putting an outline of your plan and/or maps of your local area where they can go to look if they have questions. This is also a good time to address any special needs you or your family may have and make sure everyone knows how to deal with them.
Following these steps can make all the difference in the world when disaster strikes. Being prepared can lessen the fear and panic that often occurs in an emergency and that will help keep your family safe.
